Deforestation-free Assessment Guideline
The global context
Demand for deforestation-free agricultural products is growing in Australia, driven by global climate commitments and sustainability targets. Over 11,000 companies worldwide have set Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) targets. More than 270 companies have Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) targets that include achieving no-deforestation for primary commodities such as beef by 31 December 2025, and phasing out land use change over 5-10 years to meet emissions reduction goals.
The VMAP deforestation-free guideline
A Guideline has been developed to help assess whether a beef production system is deforestation-free in Australia. It outlines the evidence producers can provide to support their claims and is tailored to Australian grazing systems and landscapes. Developed with input from the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) Backbone Team, the Guideline ensures alignment with international standards and will be updated as needed.
The Accountability Framework initiative
The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) provides guidance for companies on what constitutes deforestation and what can be considered deforestation-free. Its definitions are incorporated into leading multi-stakeholder and civil society initiatives, including SBTi. The Agriculture Sector Roadmap to 1.5°C, launched at COP27, accelerates action on deforestation and conversion in agricultural commodity supply chains.
Deforestation indicator tool
VMAP provides an educational Deforestation Indicator Tool that helps determine whether a forest loss event is likely to be considered deforestation. The tool applies Step 4 and Step 5 of the Guideline. For full information on undertaking deforestation-free assessments, review the complete Guideline. Read more about VMAP or return to the VMAP home.
